Sony Raise Whitney Houston Best Selling Album Price; Accused Of Cashing In

Sony music has been blamed for trying to cash in on Whitney Houston’s recent death after they reportedly raised the price of her best-selling album The Ultimate Collection, soon after the news broke.

Whitney Houston was found submerged and dead in a bath tub on Sunday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Although a cause of death has not been given pending the completion of the coroners report, family members stated that she did not drown, but died from a possibly deadly combination of prescription drugs and alcohol.

According to the SMH and The Guardian, her album The Ultimate Collection, which was released in 1997, was raised by up to 60% from the original price of $7.33 to $11.73 on iTunes.

After a furious backlash from fans, Sony has come out and insisted the move wasn’t quick grab for money, and “that the wholesale price of Houston’s The Ultimate Collection was wrong”. They were only correcting a mistake. The album was returned to its original price late on Sunday, and not surprisingly by Monday it was second on iTunes album sales charts.
