Avatar Director James Cameron Dives To Ocean’s Deepest Point

Director James Cameron has successfully made a record dive to the deepest point on the ocean’s floor, located at the Mariana Trench, while filming a documentary for the National Geographic channel.

According to National Geographic, he reached the point at around 8:52am AEDT this morning, tweeting on his arrival in his specially constructed diving submarine vessel.

@JimCameron: “Just arrived at the ocean’s deepest pt. Hitting bottom never felt so good. Can’t wait to share what I’m seeing w/ you”

He managed to reach the depth of 35,756 feet (10,898 meters), making him the first to do it since a then thought unimaginable dive was made in 1960.

His submarine was specially made in the Inner Sydney suburb of Leichhardt. The construction made it vertically shaped (instead of the traditional horizontal design), with a sphere at one end to prevent it crushing at the points.

It will take him as long as six hours to jettison the steel weights attached to the sub, shooting him back to the surface where his scientific support crew will be waiting.
