Jack White has spoken out about the working relationship with former White Stripes bandmate and wife Meg White in a tell-all interview with the New York Times.
In the interview with journalist Josh Eells, Jack said that, despite her shy and quiet nature, Meg was the controlling force of the group.
“Meg completely controlled the White Stripes,” he said.
“She’s the most stubborn person I’ve ever met, and you don’t even get to know the reasons.”
White goes on to reveal that their split last year stemmed from his frustration at several years of inactivity with the band – having played their last public gig in 2007.
“There came a point where I said, ‘If we’re not doing this, we need to put an end to it right now.’
“And that’s what she wanted to do.”
When asked by Eells why Meg wanted out, Jack said: “You’d have to ask her.”
“I don’t know what her reasons are. Having a conversation with Meg, you don’t really get any answers. I’m lucky that girl ever got on stage, so I’ll take what I can get.”
And, if he had his way, Jack said The White Stripes would still be together and recording a new album as we speak.
“I’d make a White Stripes record right now,” he said. “I’d be in the White Stripes for the rest of my life. That band is the most challenging, important, fulfilling thing ever to happen to me. I wish it was still here. It’s something I really, really miss.”
