When most rock stars receive a substantial sum of money, they tend to throw a huge party and go a tad crazy basking in their success.
However, when Heather Shannon and her band The Jezabels won The Australian Music Prize last month, they had a few other desired items that they decided to stock up on.
“Touring around the world is very expensive…so we used bits of it for repairing instruments, buying shoes, stockings, stage clothes…and some cupholders, they’re always handy.”
“I always find it really annoying when you hire a van and it doesn’t have any cupholders.”
While it’s unlikely they’ll be plastering cupholders around the stage, fans have the chance to see The Jezabels’ new collection of stage outfits and other goodies when they return home for their biggest Australian tour yet – in June.
The band are playing in venues such as Horden Pavillion in their hometown of Sydney – and Shannon admits she’s never thought she’d get the chance to play there.
“It’s kinda scary actually, I didn’t think it would happen at all…let alone so soon.”
“The Enmore (Theatre) was a dream, and now this is like a ‘holy fuck’ dream.”
“I’m trying to visualise the Horden in my head and imagine how big it is and how it will feel on stage…it’s going to be really exciting to walk out there.”
Shannon said the band’s setlist for the upcoming tour will feature a handful of tracks from their album Prisioner, which they haven’t played live before, along with some old tracks off their early EPs.
However, don’t expect any lasers, backup dancers or other on-stage theatrics to compliment the tunes.
“We don’t want it to be this huge in-your-face extravaganza and all that bullshit, people are coming to see us do our thing, and we don’t want to be too over-the-top about it,” she said.
“It’s going to be a much bigger production lighting wise and all that, but hopefully it will still feel intimate and something not too foreign for our fans.”
