Our Senior Music Feeds Reporter, Patrick Abboud, speaks to Baby Daddy – co-founder of the now 5-piece dirty-glam band Scissor Sisters. When the ‘band’ started out in 2001, it wasn’t really a band – just Baby Daddy’s shiny disco beats and Jake Shears’ searing vocals – they were pretty unknown to the world. Well 10 years on, so much has changed for these kooky kids – they’ve added 3 sassy new band members, had 3 hugely successful album releases, and endured a manic touring schedule, filling dance floors the globe over. Scissor Sisters have always straddled the line quite cleverly between commercial pop and dirty disco and done pretty well.
This week sees the release of their fourth studio album Magic Hour, but this time they’re not playing it safe and it goes all over the place in terms of style. You will get your fair share of the glamour you’d expect, but Shears drops a mean verse in rap on the track Fuck Yeah, there’s a trip to Trinidad with the calypso/ dancehall vibe of Best in Me, and then it goes all Latin towards then end of the album. Baby Daddy says the new melange of genres reflects the band’s communal ADD, and he reckons they get bored too easily so they need to change it out dramatically to stay excited about what they’re doing: “the album kinda sounds a bit like you’re flicking through a bunch of the best radio stations”.
