A former personal assistant of U2 bass player Adam Clayton is being accused of stealing $3.57 million from his bank accounts, writes news.com.au.
Carol Hawkins is on trial for 181 counts of stealing cheques worth 2.8 million Euros from Clayton between 2004 and 2008, while she was living rent-free at his home and earning a salary that eventually rose to 48,000 Euros a year, according to the Irish Independent newspaper.
Hawkins, who denies all the charges, stands accused of transferring the money to her own bank accounts from two of Clayton’s accounts on which she was a signatory.
Dublin’s Circuit Criminal Court heard that Mrs Hawkins was originally a housekeeper at Clayton’s mansion, Danesmoate House, but quickly gained his trust and was promoted to personal assistant and moved to live at the property.
U2 recorded their landmark album The Joshua Tree at Danesmoate House.
