It’s been almost 6 years since Californian songstress Fiona Apple released an album. Now her latest album (titled to terrorise music journalists all over the world) The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do is due for release. It was all quiet on the Apple front after her 2005 release Extraordinary Machine, though she recently sat down with Jimmy Fallon to explain her well-publicised breakdown in 2004, and performed a track off the album.
It was during a performance at the Roseland Ballroom in the New York of ’04 where Apple “Started crying and physically couldn’t stop”. The crowd, which actually contained Fallon himself as he opened the show with a 10-minute comedy performance, looked on in total confusion as Apple broke down and walked off stage. In the interview (which is embedded below) the musician, who has been able to distance herself from the incident, explains what was going through her mind at the time. Though reluctant to ‘bitch’ on international television, she makes it very clear to the person who’s to blame that it was their fault, and a particular song is not, in fact, about them.
The brief interview is followed by a live rendition of Anything We Want featuring in-house band The Roots. As well as the original track off the new album, Apple pays homage to the now 70-year-old Paul McCartney, covering Wings Let Me Roll It, oozing with her own flare and style.
