Owl City have been busy over the past few months working towards their new release The Midsummer Station. Locked and loaded for release August 20, the band have stepped out of their comfort zone to bring fans the most diverse range of tracks that still bear the Owl City vibe.
The synth-pop/popcore, whatever you like to call it, group rose to international attention following the track Fireflies, a song that has become engraved in our memories through literally countless radio plays and almost as many covers.
Earlier this year, Owl City dropped the Shooting Star EP to cleanse the palette of fans prior to the full-length, the result of which saw #OCTMS (Owl City: The Midsummer Station) trend worldwide on Twitter. For the LP, frontman Adam Young sought the wisdom of producers and other artists they have never worked with before. For Shooting Star – the first song released and one of the focus tracks on the album – Young looked to friend Matt Thiessen (Relient K), Stargate (Rihanna, Wiz Khalifa) and Robopop (Maroon 5), and for Gold – another tune set to explode airwaves – he employed the skills of Josh Crosby, Nate Campany, and Emily Wright (Dr. Luke’s engineer).
A couple of collabs can be found on the release too, including Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus and none other than fellow pop champion Carly Rea Jepsen. Young commented on working with the Call Me Maybe hit maker: “I love Carly’s song Call Me Maybe. I remember hearing it for the first time and immediately became a huge fan of hers – it is absolutely contagious. A bit later, I actually found out that she had known of my music for a while and even went to a couple of shows of mine in Vancouver so I definitely knew I wanted to collaborate with her.”
The connection between the two is undeniable if you check out the single Good Times on which the two team up. The 11-track release will document Young’s mindstate and experiences after the massive success of their previous release Ocean Eyes with unmistakable growth and progression, still with the Owl City Synthy flavour.
