This morning bidding closed for a rare 7-inch 45 vinyl of the White Stripes second single Lafayette Blues bundled with Sugar Never Tasted So Good with the winning shot coming in at $12,700 according to eBay’s What Sells Best .
Released in 1998, only 15 copies of the single were pressed by Detroit-based record label Italy Records. According to Diffuser, it was originally sold at a White Stripes gig at the Gold Dollar in Detroit for around $6. So you can imagine the seller’s joy on the return of his investment.
Adding to the value of the item is the hand-painted sleeve done by label owner Dave Buick and the red and white record the track was printed on. The sleeve also clearly notes it is no. 1 of 15 and comes with a signed letter of authenticity from Jack White himself. What’s more, the seller claims the single has never been played.
A few years ago in an interview with The Guardian, White explained that the item was actually very difficult to sell, stating that “Then we went in to sell them and you can’t pick!”, he said, “You had to buy the first one, and there was a ton of people standing around waiting for someone to buy the first one, because they didn’t want the first one. They wanted the tenth one.”
You can also imagine other punters who were at the gig face-palming themselves. Just a reminder to hang onto your singles and first EPs, you never know who will make it.
