Jimi Hendrix Biopic ‘All Is By My Side’ Won’t Feature Any Hendrix Originals

Music Feeds first reported on the Jimi Hendrix biopic All Is By My Side back in May. At that stage the film had just been given the green light to begin production and Andre Benjamin aka Andre 3000, from hip hop duo OutKast, was officially announced as the actor chosen to take on the role of the legendary guitarist.

A few days after this initial report Hendrix’s estate made public their lack of support for All Is By My Side, which reportedly was to be based during 1966-67 when Hendrix recorded his debut album Are You Experienced.

The Hendrix family-owned estate issued a public statement, which noted the fact that without the estate’s permission, no original music written by Hendrix could be featured in the biopic.

“Various media outlets have recently published accounts that indicate a feature-length Jimi Hendrix biographical film is nearing production. Experience Hendrix, LLC, the family-owned company entrusted with safeguarding the legacy of Jimi Hendrix and administrator of the Jimi Hendrix music and publishing catalog has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation.”

Despite the lack of support from Experience Hendrix, LLC, All Is By My Side went ahead with production and according to an article by NME, is set to finish shooting this week.

To compensate for its inability to use Hendrix originals, All Is By My Side has been built around Hendrix pre-fame, according to IMDb, and will see Andre 3000 cover the likes of Muddy Waters and The Beatles, acts that Hendrix covered during the 1960s.

Rolling Stone reported that among the various covers, the film will include Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles, which as Rolling Stone notes, was famously performed by Hendrix in London while members of the Beatles were in the audience.

NME reported that All Is By My Side producer Sean McKittrick said Andre 3000 portrays Hendrix in a very authentic manner.

“Andre has been Jimi for four months now. He speaks and walks like Jimi. He dropped a ton of weight. The transformation has been amazing”, McKittrick said.
