Watch: Lupe Fiasco’s Heartfelt Interview On RapFix Live

Lupe Fiasco has given an emotionally charged interview on MTV’s program RapFix Live. The popular rapper was taken for a trip down memory lane by host Sway Calloway, who replayed a clip from 2006 when Lupe first burst onto the world stage with his massive single Kick, Push.

The video was taken from the MTV show My Block and saw Lupe, real name Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, and Calloway visiting the areas and people from Lupe’s upbringing in Chicago. Once the clip concluded, Lupe was visibly shaken and fighting to hold back tears. Once he collected himself, Lupe explained the pain he felt in seeing the footage from six years prior.

“Chicago’s the murder capital. The dudes in that video are in prison, a couple of fed cases, and then there’s ghosts. You see people that, that ain’t there,” Lupe explained, “Nothing’s changed… Some of those kids ain’t gonna make it out of there. You feel so helpless. That was me, talking to me six years ago.”

“You gotta get out. Stick to what you know and get out. Because if you stay here, you gonna die, and you not gonna die for anything heroic, you not gonna die for anything meaningful. You gonna die for something that is worthless and nobody is gonna remember your name.”

The interview is a moving testament to the struggles Jaco persevered through in order to become the prominent and influential artist he is today. As noted by Rapfix, Lupe’s business partner and friend Charles ‘Chilly’ Patton was sentenced to 44 years in prison for drug conspiracy in 2007, only approximately a year after Lupe’s debut record Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor was released.

“Ain’t no song that I can make, there’s no ‘We are the World’ that I’m gonna make that’s gonna unify and make all this better,” Lupe said in the 2006 My Block clip.

Lupe Fiasco’s fourth studio record Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album, Part 1 is due out in September of this year, as well as a possible mixtape with his rap collective All City Chess Club.
