The Flaming Lips’ Tentatively Titled New Album ‘The Terror’ Out Later This Year

The Flaming Lips have revealed some more details about their upcoming new album, which has now been tentatively titled The Terror. In a recent interview with RollingStone, frontman Wayne Coyne revealed that inspiration came from a darker angle for this album.

He has spoken about the vibe of the album coming from the fact that longtime member Steven Drozd was battling with a serious drug addiction at the time, from which he was recovering. Coyne said:

“It was probably the worst time of his life. I knew he was really, really struggling. He was in a bad way. He did this one piece of music and did lyrics, all these things. Not all the pieces were audible, but he had these things saying ‘you are alone,’ and then the other voice saying, ‘I am not alone.’ Back and forth between some horrible internal dialogue. It was truly devastating.”

Of the rest of the recording process, Coyne was a little more positive. He claims that this album is “possibly the best Flaming Lips record ever made”. “We kept stumbling upon these little things”, speaking about the little snippets of improvisation found in the studio. “When you get freebies like that, it’s really great!”

The Flaming Lips will return to Australia again this New Year’s Eve for an appearance on the Falls Festival 2012/2013 lineup. Often described as a show you shouldn’t miss, no matter what music you listen to, tickets for the Lorne event have already sold out.
