Scott McKenzie – famous for his hit San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair) – has died at age 73, according to a statement on the singer’s website.
“It is with much sadness that we report the passing of Scott McKenzie in LA on the 18th of August, 2012,” said a statement posted on the website.
“Scott had been very ill recently and passed away in his home after two weeks in hospital.”
BBC reported that McKenzie was found by a neighbour in his home on Sunday afternoon. His death was confirmed by another neighbour, Victoria Byers.
McKenzie’s website added that the singer had been in and out of hospital since 2010, after falling ill with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a disease affecting the nervous system. It is also thought he suffered a heart attack in early August.
The singer was a close friend of Mamas and Papas star John Phillips, who wrote and produced San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair), which became a global hit upon its release in May 1967. The song grew into an anthem for the 1960’s counter-culture movement.
Scott spent much of the 1990s touring with the Mamas and Papas, who eventually disbanded with no original members left.
