Velociraptor – Q Music Stage
Velociraptor were closing at the QMusic stage, and that they did. Accompanied by an old bearded man on tambourine (who was wearing a probably homemade ‘I Hate Your Face’ shirt) they absolutely killed it.
There was a huge buzz leading up to their set and a reputation for an incredible live performance preceding them. From jumping on speakers to the almost impossible-to-follow instrument swaps, the amount of fun this group has on stage is completely contagious. Their music is loud, fast and in your face; their performance was much the same. Velociraptor were the perfect high note to finish the night on, and if you haven’t already, do yourself a favour and get to one of their shows. You won’t regret it.
The Trouble With Templeton – Alhanbra Lounge
The Trouble With Templeton had drawn quite a crowd to Alhambra, and after having recently supported Matt Corby alongside Alpine, there were some pretty big expectations. Their set was absolutely dreamy; that’s really the only word for it.
Their songs were a stunning mixture of indie rock and alternative folk. The group seemed to act in absolute unison and create a united front. This really complemented their sound, which could be described in the same way. Some of the songs were soft and delicate while others dug a bit deeper. The vocals coming from this group were fantastic, quite often sweet and smooth but incredibly piercing and penetrative at the same time. Absolute kudos to The Trouble With Templeton; they really delivered a beautiful performance.
Gung Ho – Alhanbra Lounge
Gung Ho were so energetic, so entertaining and, minus rocking so hard the symbol flew off the kit a few times, brought the audience a truly fun performance. It was easy to see how hard the guys were working on stage and it really paid off.
Their songs were polished and insanely easy to listen to. By the end of their set they had drawn a decent crowd and had every toe tapping and head bopping. Given the chance, it’s definitely worth checking these guys out; they delivered a great show.
Go Violets – triple J unearthed stage at OH Hello
Indie pop group the Go Violets kicked off the first night of BigSound 2012 at the triple j unearthed stage at Oh! Hello. The four-piece girl band played some super catchy, sweet and feminine tunes. As one of the winners of the triple j Unearthed BIGSOUND competition they proved they had earned their place as they rocked the audiences’ world…in a soft and charming kind of way.
Their songs would be perfect for an afternoon drive or a day by the pool, but be warned: the infectious melodies will be stuck in your head for hours. The girls looked adorable and certainly held their own on the stage, looking comfortable and cool throughout the performance. The Go Violets were the perfect act to ease the crowd into a huge night of great home-grown talent.
