Wu-Tang Clan Sued For ‘Illegal Samples’

Wu-Tang Clan have been hit with a Sample Suit with two record companies claiming the group’s song New Wu has illegal samples in it.

AllHipHop and Pitchfork report that Bridgeport Music and Westbound Records filed a lawsuit on September 7, claiming New Wu illegally samples four measures (aka 12 seconds) of the Magictones’ 1971 song I’ve Changed.

New Wu appeared on Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon’s album Only Built for Cuban Linx… Pt. II, which was released in 2009.  The song was a family affair – with RZA producing the track, and Method Man and Ghostface also appearing on the track.

“These four measures have been sped up approximately 8.9%, making them last approximately 10 seconds and raising their key by one step from E minor to F# minor,” the lawsuit reads.

Bridgeport Music/West Bound Records are suing for copyright infringement, unfair competition, and lawyer fees.
