Listen: Tom Morello, Serj Tankian & Tim McIlrath Collaborate On ‘We Are The 99%’

Some of the three most politically inspired figures in alternative metal have united forces to deliver a super-charged track in honour of the one-year anniversary of Occupy Wall Street. We Are the 99% is now available for free download.

Speaking on behalf of the trio, Rage Against the Machine‘s Tom Morello went into details on the “huge riff anthem” stating that “I wanted to create a song that felt like it’s powerful and as exciting as the global Occupation movement feels to me…It’s supposed to be a song that sounds like the dam is breaking. Like there’s a jail break and the dam is breaking at the same time.” Morello told KROQ.

Morello also commented on working with SOAD‘s Serj and Rise Against‘s Tim McIlrath: “It’s the perfect trifecta of alt-metal protest rock,” he mentioned, “They’re both great musicians, great friends and always down for the cause. Whenever I make my many asks for charity and activist work, those guys always say yeah. It’s an honor to be on the song with the two of my favorite singers.”

The trio have been politically outspoken over a number of topics for the majority of their careers. Morella was a key figure during the Occupy movement and recently performed at the one-year anniversary concert.
