The Smiths Reunion: “It Isn’t Happening”

Rumours circulating yesterday that Morrissey and Johnny Marr (the two main men from legendary Manchester group The Smiths) might consider reforming for a slot on the Coachella festival have now all but been crushed, not that there was a chance anyway, but slim hopes are always worth a mention with this band.

Yesterday an interview with The Herald Sun revealed that Coachella was willing to book him and Marr as The Smiths in return for a 100% vegetarian festival. Morrissey, as we all know, has strong views on eating meat and seemed chuffed in a way, saying “Interestingly the agents for Coachella offered a 100% vegetarian event for the following year if I would agree to headline with Johnny Marr as the Smiths…Fascinatingly they made it clear that they would ‘not require’ the Smiths’ bass player or drummer…which I thought certainly said something.”

But, as expected, representatives for Morrissey and Johnny Marr have not only denied that it will be happening, but they have also crushed any chance of it ever happening completely. Morrissey’s publicist used the quote “The Smiths are never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever going to reunite – ever” when speaking to the RollingStone, and Marr’s manager said “It isn’t happening. We are fully focussed on preparing Johnny’s new album for release and booking shows for 2013.

Well, that’s a little disappointing, but not really unexpected. We’ll see Moz touring Australia and New Zealand later on this year, after he completes a 35-date US tour.
