2012 AIR Awards – Winners Announced

This year’s winners for the Jagermeister Independent Music Awards were announced last night, bestowing 12 awards on some of our finest Aussie indie talent. Chet Faker took two prizes at the event, as well as performing a surprise unannounced live performance, while the rest were spread out over a range of our own homegrown talent.

Best Independent Album was taken by Sydney garage punk band Royal Headache, who claimed it with their self-titled debut album. The Jezabels, who were dual award winners last year, backed it up again as the repeated winners for Best Independent Artist. Winning this award again only caps off yet another big year for them, both locally and internationally.

The inaugural award for Best Independent Label was taken by Sydney hip hop collective Elefant Traks, who in the past year have released albums from The Herd, Urthboy, Hermitude, Sietta, The Last Kinection, and Sky High.

Other winners to note were Brisbane two-piece DZ Deathrays, who took out the award for Best Independent Hard Rock or Punk Album for their debut album Bloodstreams; 360, who won Best Independent Hip Hop Album for Falling and Flying; Lanie Lane, who won Best Independent Blues and Roots Album for To the Horses; and Best Independent Dance/Electronica Album went to Hermitude for HyperParadise.
