Listen: Soundgarden’s New Single ‘Non-State Actor’

Soundgarden have released their latest single Non-State Actor from upcoming album King Animal, due out November 2013. As noted by Prefix as the second single lifted from King Animal, Non-State Actor doesn’t necessarily show any evolution in Soundgarden’s sound but rather highlights how powerful 90s grunge band still is.

As explained in the single’s commentary clip, Non-State Actor was written by Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Ben Shepherd with Thayil scripting the lyrics and Shephard writing the music. Non-State Actor is the first time the pair have constructed a song in such a way with Shepherd descirbing the track as “rhythmically evocative of other countries”.

Music Feeds’ Stephanie Myers reviewed King Animal and said the soon-to-be released LP is, “concrete proof that the band still has the musical chops and grit to cut it in the modern musical environment.” Myers then goes on to praise the reunited outfit stating that, “the remarkable thing about Soundgarden is that they’re a band who’s able to pick up where they left off without sacrificing quality.”

From listening to Non-State Actor it’s easy to hear the quality that Myers’ is talking about.
