Ben Sollee Announces Australian Tour, Jan 2013

Acclaimed cellist Ben Sollee is headed to Australia for a massive run of tour dates, kicking off at Woodford Folk Festival over New Year. Touring behind his 2012 album Half Made Man, the Kentucky musician will be aided by the mad skills of percussionist Jordon Ellis.

Renowned for his contemporary cello playing, Sollee combines influences from jazz, bluegrass, R&B and folk that accentuate the intriguing artist’s joyful and heartfelt vocal styling. Unassuming and appealing, Sollee has drawn comparisons to Sufjan Stevens for his sound, which feels familiar yet also fills a niche.

Sollee’s fourth studio LP, the aforementioned Half Made Man, is self-produced and features the handy work of My Morning Jacket member Carl Broemel, who rocks a little pedal steel along with some acoustic and electric guitar.

Taking the rich tradition of cello and flipping the script with his unconventional play, Sollee is to the cello what Mumford and Sons are to the banjo. He reintroduces an underrated instrument to a new generation of music fans and expands the possibilities of musical innovation.
