Now this is just the kind of news that will make Queens of the Stone Age and Dave Grohl fans drool.
The rock god has told BBC Radio 1 presenter Zane Lone just how “completely ridiculous” QOTSA’s new album is sounding – which he is playing drums on.
“With Queens of the Stone Age, like, there were no boundaries with that band, there were no limits with them, it was like if you did something insane, you’d do more, if you did something that seemed too ridiculous – and honestly the new Queens of the Stone Age record, I’m playing drums on that, and I’ll do something so completely ridiculous, I’ll just, like, ‘There’s no way that Josh isn’t going to let me do that,’ and he’ll say, ‘Do that for forty-five seconds, over and over again, that’s become, like, part of the song, that is a big part of the song,’ and that’s the way they work,” Grohl said.
Grohl also shed light on the atmosphere that surrounds the band – going as far to describing them as ‘the baddest rock and roll band in the world’.
“When you walk into a festival backstage with Queens of the Stone Age, it’s like, the record stops. People stop and they stare, and it’s like, Queens of the Stone Age are, without question, the baddest rock and roll band in the world! And they still are, and when Songs for the Deaf came out, it blew people’s minds, man, for real.”
Grohl has rejoined QOTSA after Joey Castillo left the band earlier this month. He did drums on the band’s 2002 record Songs for the Deaf – which was home to that year’s triple j Hottest 100 topper No One Knows.
The former Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters’ frontman also previously collaborated with QOTSA frontman Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones for their Them Crooked Vultures supergroup and album in 2009/10.
Queens of the Stone Age have one date locked in so far for next year – at the 2013 Download Festival in the UK in June. Could that mark Grohl’s return to the live stage with the band?
