SPIN Magazine Ceases Print Edition, Goes Online Only

Iconic American music magazine SPIN has ceased printing after 27 years, and will now be an online-only publication.

The Daily Swarm was alerted to publishers Buzzmedia’s decision to cease printing the magazine, after subscribers received a copy of Car and Driver magazine, with a letter outlining the publication’s future.

The letter, which can be viewed by clicking here, declares that SPIN Magazine “ceased publication after the September/October 2012 issue” and that as a replacement, subscribers will receive an issue of Car and Driver for each issue that they have left on their subscriptions. Car and Driver have also offered refunds to any subscribers who don’t necessarily want to be reading about cars instead of music news every month.

Back in July, when publishers Spin Media were sold to online media company Buzzmedia, the new owners declared plans to expand its online presence and the amount of dedicated online staff working on the publication.

Two weeks later, mass layoffs were announced and plans for the December/November issue was scrapped, prompting speculation over the magazine’s future in the printed format.

Slicing Up Eyeballs described SPIN’s death in print as “an unceremonious end for the magazine that, in the late ’80s, chronicled the rise of college rock and the indie underground”.
