In the Black Sabbath guitarist’s own words, “Well here’s something different”. A track that features music written by Tony Iommi has been selected by the great nation of Armenia as their performance for the prestigious annual Eurovision.
The song, called Lonely Planet, will be performed by Armenia band Dorians, who, according to Iommi, wrote the lyrics for the tune, which are apparently all in English. The connection isn’t all that obscure. Iommi’s involvement with the country dates back to 1988, according to Loud Wire, when he helped raise funds following a devastating earthquake that hit the region.
Iommi also tagged a team of other iconic musicians from bands such as Deep Purple and Iron Maiden, and Metallica’s Jason Newstead to record a two-track benefit single.
Eurovision is one of the most anticipated spectacles of the year and has launched careers of mega stars such as ABBA and Celine Dion. Who knows, maybe Dorians will be the next big thing. That’ll make it an even bigger year for the guitarist, who is set to feature on Black Sabbaths forthcoming 13.

Well here’s something different, one of my demo ideas has been chosen as the Armenian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest! It went on a short list and Saturday night was voted as the winner. I did the music and the performing band Dorians wrote the lyrics, it’s called ‘Lonely Planet’. They’re a good band, the singer has a really good voice and the lyrics they’ve written are in English. It now goes to the semi-final on May 16th in Malmo, Sweden. Glad to be able to be involved with Armenia again, the school is coming along fine, they’ve got the furniture sorted and it will be opened late summer.
