Musical Inspired By The Flaming Lips Could Head To Broadway

A musical which was inspired by The Flaming Lips‘ Grammy-winning album Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots could premiere on Broadway in the near future.

Broadway World reports that the musical’s producer – Chun-soo Shun – wants to take Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots to the next level, following a successful debut at the La Jolla Playhouse in California last year. The production at that venue featured glowing LED costumes, projections and a 14-foot robot puppet.

According to Diffuser, Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots follows Yoshimi, a Japanese artist engaged in the battle of her life as she drifts alone, far from her family and her lover. She embarks on this battle in a fantastical robot world, where her will to survive is tested by evil forces hellbent on destroying her.

No official dates, casting or theatre have been set, but it is believed Shun is hoping to take the production to Broadway and parts of Asia (you’d imagine his native Korea would be on that list) in early 2014.

The La Jolla production of Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots was directed by Des McAnuff, who has previously worked on classic Broadway titles Jersey Boys and Jesus Christ Superstar. The cast included Kimiko Glenn as Yoshimi, Nik Walker as Booker, Paul Nolan as Ben and Tom Hewitt as Doctor Petersen.
