Jason Molina Of Songs: Ohia & Magnolia Electric Co. Dead At 39

Jason Molina, the American singer-songwriter known for his solo works and projects like Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co., has died of natural causes aged 39.

Secretly Canadian, the label that released much of Molina’s music, has posted a statement regarding Molina’s passing. In the statement, mention is made of Molina’s struggles with severe alcoholism, which eventually led to Molina cancelling tour dates in 2009 and the public admission of his substance abuse in September of 2011.

Secretly Canadian have stated that fans can give to Molina’s medical fund as a form of memorial gift. The label also writes that both the man and the musician will be greatly missed:

“We’re going to miss Jason. He was generous. He was a one of a kind. And he had a voice unlike any other.”

As Molina wrote in May 2012, his treatment for alcoholism sought to deal with issues that “even the music didn’t want to”. His final album was last year’s record, Autumn Bird Songs, released under his own name.
