The New Pollution: # 006 – Dutch Uncles

In the spirit of the band’s name (i.e. one who uses harsh comments/criticism to educate) Dutch Uncles are like a talented British version of The Drums. Both bands have fairly obvious influences stemming from the 1980s, they’re both five-piece acts, and both frontmen exhibit some pretty cringe-worthy dance moves. Where Jonathan Pierce (Drums lead singer) hasn’t taken his impersonation of Ian Curtis to it’s logical conclusion, Duncan Wallis (of Dutch Uncles) takes the avant-garde flair of Talking Heads and reworks it into something entirely listenable.

The band formed while its members were in college and much like The Beatles, Dutch Uncles enjoyed a sojourn in Hamburg during their formative years. They recorded a self-titled LP in Germany (2009) and then a second LP entitled Cadenza, which was released in April of 2011. Since then, Dutch Uncles have been appearing at all the big British festivals (Reading & Leeds, Bestival, Great Escape, Latitude etc) and are booked in to appear at SxSW in March, 2012.

If you enjoy the music of The Smiths, XTC and Talking Heads, give Dutch Uncles a go. The title track from their latest album (embedded below) promotes them better than I ever could.
