Now-a-days we know her as the flamboyant and devastatingly sexy leader of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but there was once a time when Karen O – or Karen Orzolek, as she was known in her previous life – was in a much darker place. In a recent interview, Karen has explained how the Yeah Yeah Yeahs helped her through one of the darkest times of her life.
As Artist Direct have detailed, the vocalist recalled the untimely passing of her best friend and the pivotal role her band played in the situation, “This band has gotten us all through a lot. Me specifically, the death of one of my best friends around the time we started. I was 22. I was a baby.”
She adds, “I was totally traumatized and devastated and lost, and if I didn’t have the Yeah Yeah Yeahs taking me around the world… I’m not sure what would have happened.”
