Ding Dong! The Witch Is Number One

They say to never speak ill of the dead but they never said anything about throwing a parade and singing about the dead with harmonising munchkins.

The recent death of Margaret Thatcher sparked various social media campaigns that aimed to make Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead, the cheery death song from The Wizard Of Oz, #1 on the Official UK Singles Chart.

Now the original 1939 Judy Garland version of Ding Dong! has topped the British iTunes singles chart. According to the Official Charts Company this means that the movie version of Ding Dong! which is currently credited to ‘Wizard Of Oz Film Cast’, will soon officially be in the Top 10 on the Official UK Singles Chart once all retailer sales have been compiled.

Having sold over 10,600 copies since Thatcher’s death on Monday, 8th April, Ding Dong! is approximately 5,000 sales away from cracking the top 3. News.com.au notes the track might reach #1 on the Official UK Singles Chart next week.

A 1961 cover version of Ding Dong! by Ella Fitzgerald has also remergeed in the UK Singles Charts, last reported at #164.
