The front door of Paul McCartney‘s childhood home in Liverpool has been auctioned off this week, fetching £5,000, roughly $7,300 Australian dollars.
McCartney lived in the house at 20 Forthlin Road, Allerton, Liverpool, between 1955-1964, and according to the Scotsman, is where he learned to play trumpet, piano, guitar and drums. After the McCartneys moved out, the property was purchased by Sheila Jones, who welcomed Beatles fans from around the world who came to visit the house. In the late 1970s, the house was refurbished and the original door was sold to a singer named Glen South, who kept it behind his sofa – as you do.
The door was auctioned off by Dominic Winter Auctioneers in Gloucestershire, with auctioneer Chris Albury saying, “It came down to three people bidding against each other and the winner was a phone bidder from Lancashire. We’re very happy with the result.” The door was estimated to fetch between £3,000 and £5,000.
Perhaps the door’s new owner really wanted to get their mitts on the custom-built VOX guitar played by John Lennon and George Harrison that goes up for auction next month, but couldn’t afford the expected $200,000-$300,000 price tag. Either way, buying Sir Paul’s old front door is slightly less creepy than the fan who supposedly paid $2,200 for George Harrison’s half-eaten toast.
