Finally, word has come through from Lil Wayne himself following weeks of criticism in regards to some highly controversial lyrics regarding Emmett Till. In his statement, Weezy once and for all acknowledges the Till family’s hurt but stops short of actually apologising.
The full statement, which you can read below, has no doubt been cross-examined by a team of publicists, and then again by a team of lawyers to ensure there is no room for a lawsuit. Addressed to the family of Emmett Till, Weezy’s open letter explains, “I would like to take a moment to acknowledge your hurt,” also noting acknowledgement of a letter sent to the rapper by the family’s legal representation.
Weezy continues to make amends by adding that he “will not use or reference Emmett Till or the Till family in my music”, stating that he fully supports “Epic Record’s decision to take down the unauthorized version” and that he “will not be performing the lyrics that contain that reference live and have removed them from my catalogue.” No where, however, does he simply just apologise for doing it.
In an attempt to justify the offensive lyric, he explains, “As a recording artist, I have always been interested in word play.” He is also sure to mention that there are a number of African-American staffers on his payroll, and that he “gives philanthropically to organisations.” This will surely please Mountain Dew who who seem to be disproportionately associated with racial controversay these past few days.
The ball is now on the Till family court as to whether this acknowledgement should suffice.

“As a recording artist, I have always been interested in word play. My lyrics often reference people, places and events in my music, as well as the music that I create for or alongside other artists.
It has come to my attention that lyrics from my contribution to a fellow artist’s song has deeply offended your family. As a father myself, I cannot imagine the pain that your family has had to endure. I would like to take a moment to acknowledge your hurt, as well as the letter you sent to me via your attorneys.
Moving forward, I will not use or reference Emmett Till or the Till family in my music, especially in an inappropriate manner. I fully support Epic Record’s decision to take down the unauthorized version of the song and to not include the reference in the version that went to retail. I will not be performing the lyrics that contain that reference live and have removed them from my catalogue.
I have tremendous respect for those who paved the way for the liberty and opportunities that African-Americans currently enjoy. As a business owner who employs several African-American employees and gives philanthropically to organizations that help youth to pursue their dreams my ultimate intention is to uplift rather than degrade our community.
