Heavy Metal Degree Causes Controversy In The UK

Education campaigners in the UK are slamming a new degree in heavy metal, calling it an “easy option” and saying that it’s a waste of time.

The 2-year course is being offered by New College, Nottingham, with students learning how to compose and perform heavy metal songs, as well as studying the history of the genre and its role in film and video games.

But Chris McGovern, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, has spoken out against the program to BBC News, saying that there are too many degrees being offered that lack credibility:

I suspect that may be the case with this course, unless you want to be a heavy metal star, in which case why would you need a degree in the subject? It might seem an attractive, easy option to some people. But you don’t need to do a degree in heavy metal. It’s a waste of time.

However, course developer Liam Maloy, who spent 7 months developing the content, claims that the degree is academically rigorous, saying, “In the past, heavy metal has not been taken seriously and is seen as lacking academic credibility when compared with other genres such as jazz and classical music. But that’s just a cultural construction.”

The course is set to start this September.
