Spotify Celebrates First Australian Birthday With New Streaming Charts

Music streaming heavyweight Spotify has been running for a whole year in Australia as of this Wednesday, with 42.5 million hours of music streamed by Australian users, and they’re launching live charts and releasing trend figures to commemorate the occasion.

Spotify Charts will show both the most streamed and most shared songs on the service each week, giving punters access to the data that shows an artist’s popularity for the first time. Right now Daft Punk’s Get Lucky is holding the top spot for most streamed song of the week – surprise, surprise – with English folk singer Passenger not too far behind with his track Let Her Go.

Spotify have also released some data showing the overall usage by Aussies over the past 12 months, with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis the most streamed artist, followed by Florence And The Machine and Rihanna. The title of most streamed local artist went to Sydney prodigy Flume, with his track Holdin On also taking out the most streamed local song. Tame Impala, Guy Sebastian, 360 and The Rubens rounded out the top 5 locals.

Kate Vale, Spotify’s Australia and New Zealand Managing Director stated:

“I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved in Australia in such a small space of time. We were quickly embraced to become the firm market leader within weeks of launch – the sheer volume of activity should illustrate how popular the service has been.

“We’re excited that Aussies are choosing us as their go-to source to discover and consume more music than ever before.”
