LISTEN: Boards Of Canada One-Up Daft Punk With Barely Publicised Desert Listening Party

It seems Scottish ambient duo Boards Of Canada have been reading How To Tease The Hell Out Of Your Album: An Illustrated Guide by Daft Punk, featuring a forward from Kanye West, in the lead-up to their first album release in 8 years, Tomorrow’s Harvest.

Not content with just the epic game of cat and mouse that was the album announce – if you missed it, think online code solving and unique one-off record releases – the brothers have kept up the shenanigans since. Firstly, they pulled a Yeezy and debuted their video for Reach For The Dead by projecting it onto a building in Tokyo. Then they got a little Daft Punk on us and broadcast a new track, thought to be called Cold Earth, over the soundsystem at Detroit’s Movement Festival, just before their labelmate Squarepusher‘s set.

But that’s not all, folks. If you thought the Random Access Memories global album launch in regional Wee Waa was obscure, BoC have one-upped it. The band didn’t even announce a launch but simply tweeted a pair of co-ordinates that lead to Yermo, in the middle of the Californian desert, as well as “May 27, 17:00”.

A bunch of loyal fans trekked out to the specified spot on the map to find themselves at the first listening party for the outfit’s fourth album, with a pair of speakers set up next to a trailer. Fans were instructed that they could record the first 3 songs only, with one dude even live-streaming the event (below).

Tomorrow’s Harvest is released locally on Friday, 7th June, which leaves just under a couple weeks for more pre-release shenanigans from Boards Of Canada. The album can be pre-ordered from Warp Records.
