Daft Punk‘s Random Access Memories has been breaking records Around The World, with the French electronic duo’s fourth studio album becoming not just the fastest-selling release of the year in Australia and the UK but is expected to top the charts in the US too.
Random Access Memories has sold 49,175 copies in Australia, taking it to the top of the ARIA charts and making it the fastest selling album of 2013 so far. Almost 50,000 sales is a helluva lot of records on our isolated little island – to compare, the album in the number 2 spot right now, The National‘s Trouble Will Find Me, sold 6,767 units and the previous contender for fastest seller, Michael Buble‘s To Be Loved, shifted 15,487 copies in its debut week.
The record is the fastest seller of the year in the UK too, with a whopping 165,000 albums sold. It’s expected to sell 300,000 copies in America according to Billboard, which will take it to the top of the charts, which are released 29th May. But it ain’t got nothing on the current fastest-selling album is the States – that record is held by none other than Justin Timberlake, who moved 968,000 units of The 20/20 Experience earlier in the year. Wowzers.
Not content with chart-topping and record-breaking with physical sales, Random Access Memories is also being awarded the accolade of most Spotify streams in its first week of release in the USA. Spotify haven’t released the exact number of streams, but the previous record holder, Mumford & Sons‘ Babel, had 8 million streams.
We’re sure there’s an obvious pun to be made about Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo getting lucky, but let’s face it: there ain’t no luck here, just a brilliant album and a killer marketing campaign.
