In a recent interview with Bust Magazine, the iconic Courtney Love has enlightened us on her uphill struggle to find a female bassist to help out with new material. Love took to the wild world of Craigslist, advertising the specifics required for the job but managed to only attract one response.
In her ad, Love wrote, “Band in the style of Hole looking for bassist in the style of Melissa Auf der Maur,” Auf der Maur being the bassist from Love’s former project Hole.
But the gig just didn’t sound sweet enough, apparently. Only one person put their hand up for it, and with her new lineup featuring confirmed male Shawn Dailey on the bass, that person clearly didn’t make the cut.
“There’s just not a lot of chick bass players,” Love said, throwing glibness in the face of statistics.
The infamous Celebrity Skin rocker will be releasing her latest material under her own name. She’s had success before with this, back in 2010 following Nobodies Daughter and, after being run down by intense lawyer speak, Love decided to give it another crack:
“My name symbolizes a lot of things, and I have to sit in these rooms with lawyers and be called a ‘brand’ often, so I was just like, ‘Fucking name it after me!’ I don’t care.”
The new material from Love and her latest ensemble will come in the form of a full-length release. Things are only in the beta stages though, with the band yet to decide on a name. Love explains:
“I’m thinking of maybe naming my fucking album Died Blonde, because I’m in such a morbid space… It’s not that I’m unhappy. And it’s certainly not that I’m crazy. It’s just that I know all this shit, and I don’t know what to do with it.”
As for the tracks on the record, so far they’ve got four down pat, two of which are “excellent songs” and the other two are “good songs”. Love has the idea to release just the two excellent ones titled California and Wedding Day on their own, like an “old-school single.”
