Courtney Love Gives Jay-Z Permission To Use Nirvana Lyrics

Jay-Z will be using Nirvana lyrics on his upcoming twelfth studio album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, with Kurt Cobain‘s widow Courtney Love saying she gave the rapper permission to use the words to Smells Like Teen Spirit on the record.

Speaking to Huffington Post, Love said, “I’m letting Jay-Z use lyrics – Frances [Bean Cobain] would freak [if she knew about it]. Jay-Z’s huge and we’re friends. I mean we’re not besties or anything…” It’s unclear whether Frances Bean will be freaking in a good way or a bad way, but if there’s anyone who can do something new and innovative with one of the most iconic rock songs ever, surely it’s Hov.

Love herself has covered Jay-Z in the past, performing 99 Problems at a Sundance Film Festival gig at the start of the year, so the trade-off seems only fair. Magna Carta Holy Grail will be released next month and is already set to go platinum, with the rapper giving away free advance copies of the record to Samsung Galaxy users. Love is also set to release new music this year, with her first solo record in almost a decade coming out at the end of the year.
