Blur’s Alex James Talks Big Day Out 2014

Blur bassist Alex James says the reformed Britpop legends are stoked to be playing next summer’s biggest ticket, the Big Day Out, announcing that the band is playing better than ever and that “everything about festivals has gotten better”. Sounds like a pretty winning combination to us.

The 44-year-old told Fairfax Media that the quartet have been wanting to get back to Australia since they last played here in 1997:

“We had a great time in Australia last time, so I think it’s going to be crazy. I’m having my mind blown by travelling all over the world again with the band, it’s fantastic, and we’re playing better than we ever have before. It’s a while since we’ve played festivals, but everything about festivals has got better… the only thing you can’t guarantee is the weather.

He said that the Girls and Boys legends were motivated to do the festival to thank their Aussie fans:

“I thought Blur was all over, but we had an amazing year last year – we were given a Brit [Award], released a couple of new songs, did a big show to mark the end of the Olympics in Hyde Park and we thought ‘let’s get to some places we haven’t been to for a while’ to say thank you to everyone for their patience and support.”

James also warned that the band would not only dominate on stage but also in the backstage ping pong stakes too, promising that frontman Damon Albarn is their star player. “We’re the table tennis champions, no one will take us,” he said. Here at Music Feeds, we’d put money on ol’ Snoop Lion giving Damon a good run for his money.
