Soulfly, Mastodon, The Dillinger Escape Plan & The Mars Volta Members Enter The Studio

A heavy metal supergroup composed of Soulfly singer Max Cavalera, Mastodon frontman Troy Sanders, Greg Puciato of The Dillinger Escape Plan, and drummer Dave Elitch, formerly of The Mars Volta, have entered an LA recording studio to begin work on an upcoming collaborative album.

Music Feeds reported back in November 2012 of an unnamed project that would involve the legendary artists, along with Converge bassist Nate Netwon. No word yet on Newton’s involvement in the project, but speaking to a Singapore radio station in 2012, Cavalera called the project “very original” and added “I don’t know any other metal projects out there with three people singing like this.”

The album is being recorded at LA’s Fortress Studios and will be produced by Josh Wilbur, most notable for producing Lamb of God‘s universally acclaimed 2009 album Wrath, as well as releases by Gojira, Hatebreed, The Living End, and Limp Bizkit.

Speaking to Terrorizer as he made his way to the studio yesterday, the iconic former Sepultura frontman expressed optimism about the presently untitled project, saying:

“It’s going to be cool, we just don’t have a name yet, the name is a pain in the ass…but the music is great. We have been working on this for two years!

“Greg approached me kinda like how Alex [Newport] approached me to do Nailbomb in that he was really, really trying to get me to do this project.

“I told him already I was pretty busy doing Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy [and] I was not really looking for an extra thing, but he was pretty insistent and then I just gave up and was like ‘let’s fucking do this!'”

Cavalera elaborated on the logistics of the group, explaining that all three singers — Sanders, Puciato, and himself — will appear on each song and described the songs as being “really powerful” and “real heavy.” He also expressed enthusiasm about the preparation for the recordings, saying “the last jam we did sounded killer.”

Cavalera said fans can expect the album to be released some time next year.
