Rock stalwart Robert Plant has made a discovery that’s sure to delight Led Zeppelin fans, with the legendary lead vocalist announcing that he’s uncovered some never-before-heard recordings from the band, with some even featuring bassist John Paul Jones on lead vocals.
Plant told BBC Radio 6 that the unearthed rarities came as a complete surprise to him:
“I found some quarter-inch spools recently. I had a meeting with Jimmy [Page] and we baked ’em up and listened to ’em. And there’s some very, very interesting bits and pieces that probably will turn up on these things.”
The tracks are likely to make their way onto Led Zeppelin’s soon to be re-released back catalogue, which is currently being remastered (again), but Plant says Jones is not a very happy camper about his singing seeing the light of day. “I’m desperately trying to get this one track, or the two tracks, of John Paul Jones singing lead. He’s going to give me two cars and a greenhouse not to get them on the album.”
The reissued Led Zep material is the band’s first project in 20 years, with Plant telling Rolling Stone that the remaster is a necessity. “Everything is being transferred from analog to a higher-resolution digital format. That’s one of the problems with the Zeppelin stuff. It sounds ridiculous on MP3. You can’t hear what’s there properly.”
It’s been a hectic year for the rock ‘n’ roll hero, with Plant allegedly taking out a a restraining order back in May against a crazed stalker who believed she was in a relationship with the lead vocalist and lyricist, despite never having met him.
