AJ Maddah Drops New Hints About Blur’s Big Day Out Replacement

UPDATE: Blur replacements have finally been announced – full details here!

Big Day Out promoter AJ Maddah has stayed loyal to his charitable reputation regarding lineup clues and responding to fan queries, recently revealing via Twitter, that the band set to be Blur‘s direct replacement at BDO 2014 is a band he saw while on a trip to London earlier this year.

“Very excited about [Blur’s] direct replacement whom I saw in London a few months ago! Other bands are good too,” Maddah tweeted, after an exchange with a fan over whether BDO promoters would sue Blur. Said Maddah: “I would SERIOUSlY love to do that. But I’m just a minority partner…”

According to FasterLouder, the promoter was in the UK from June till mid-August to see bands and attend summer festivals as well as industry events such as the Kerrang! and Metal Hammer awards. During his trip Maddah tweeted kind sentiments for two bands in particular.

“Combination Beady Eye show and sauna at Camden Centre tonight. Band is amazing,” tweeted Maddah in June. When asked about his feelings towards Smashing Pumpkins in late August, Maddah told a fan, “Saw them in London a few weeks ago. Was amazing.”

Australia’s most powerful music industry figure and the Pumpkins’ frontman are reportedly on good terms. “Surprised to say [Billy] Corgan is a really good guy,” tweeted Maddah after meeting the singer at the London show, as reported by FL. “Super intelligent as you’d suspect,” added Maddah.

FOUR BANDS MAY REPLACE BLUR AT BIG DAY OUT!

In the meantime, speculation as to who the one UK act and two US bands set to replace Blur could be continues. An interview Maddah gave to Triple J‘s The Doctor last week revealed some details and had outlets reporting that one of the US bands could be alt legends Jane’s Addiction.

After Maddah mentioned that one of the US bands’ guitarists had “TV commitments,” The Doctor said he knew of one US guitarist who had a TV show and “doesn’t wear a shirt very often.” The guitarist in question, Dave Navarro, later tweeted, “Sorry, that isn’t true!” regarding an Aussie tour.

Some fans’ attentions have now turned to Sleater-Kinney, whose guitarist Carrie Brownstein co-stars on sketch comedy series Portlandia with Fred Armisen, whose fourth season is now in production. Portland was the backdrop for the band’s recent reunion during a Pearl Jam concert.

Maddah also revealed to The Doctor that the UK band would “soothe” the pains of those who are looking for a more nostalgic Big Day Out experience and that he wasn’t sure if the event’s promoters would be seeing any money from their toxic Britpop investment any time soon.
