Washington Town Declares 10th April ‘Nirvana Day’

The town of Hoquiam, Washington, located in Grays Harbor County with a population of 8,726, has declared 10th April to be ‘Nirvana Day,’ in honour of the famous grunge outfit, whose iconic frontman Kurt Cobain spent his first year of life in the town before relocating to Aberdeen.

“They bring great honor, I think…to our entire community,” Hoquiam Mayor Jack Durney told KXRO. “And I think that it’s good Kurt Cobain lived in Hoquiam for a little while, but he and Krist Novoselic are part of our community, and I think it’s good to honor our sons and their great accomplishments.”

While the band are assuredly content to be receiving such an honour, it’s doubtful surviving members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic will make it to Hoquiam for the special date, as they’re being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with Kiss and Peter Gabriel that day.

Speaking on their Rock Hall induction, Grohl said, “From the basements, to the dingy clubs, to the broken down vans, to…the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I’d like to thank the committee not only for this induction, but also for recognizing Nirvana for what we were: pure rock and roll.”

Both the band’s Rock Hall induction and Hoquiam’s inaugural ‘Nirvana Day’ will be happening just five days after the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death. The troubled frontman famously committed suicide via self-inflicted gunshot at his Seattle home.
