Talking Heads Unreleased 1976 Track Unveiled

An instrumental ‘theme’ song from groundbreaking New Wave band Talking Heads has surfaced online. The track was recorded live at the legendary CBGB rock club, where the likes of Television, Ramones, Blondie, and Richard Hell & The Voidoids got their start, in New York City in 1976.

The band were still a trio at the time — David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, and Chris Frantz — with second guitarist Jerry Harrison yet to join, and the band yet to incorporate the polyrhythmic Afropop influences that saw them expand to a stage lineup of more than 10 musicians and percussionists.

The night the track was recorded the band played two sets alongside Television (who recently came Down Under) and is simply titled Theme. When a fan at the beginning of the recording asks, “No title?” Byrne replies “We call it Theme, but then we just keep it to ourselves.”
