Brian May Undergoing Tests Amid Cancer Fears

Queen guitarist Brian May has revealed to fans that he has been undergoing “urgent” tests over fears he could have cancer. The rock legend told fans on his website of scans arranged by his doctor, after the musician complained of severe pain that was affecting his ability to stand up.

Initial MRI scans indicated “abnormalities in the bones,” which led to further tests performed over the Christmas period. May, who is currently producing a film on former bandmate Freddie Mercury, said that he remains optimistic as the results of the tests have so far shown no sign of cancer.

The 66-year-old guitarist, who regularly updates fans on his activities via the Bri’s Soapbox section of his personal website, said in a post on late last week that he began to feel “bad pains in the backside” three months after undergoing knee replacement surgery earlier this year. He wrote:

“So around Christmas I’ve been having a succession of blood tests, ultrasounds, and various kinds of scans, to see if they could rule out various kinds of cancer. Now, on hearing the ‘C’ word something happens inside you…of course. I’ve seen so many of my dear friends fighting it…and my Dad lost his battle at age 66, exactly the age I am now.

“So over the last few days I’ve been in various states of unrest. But the great thing has been that the team my GP assembled to check out the possibilities has moved heaven and earth to gather all the information I need quickly over the Christmas period…not an easy time.”

An update this week thanked fans for their support, saying, “I’ve been overwhelmed by the amazing messages you’ve been sending me, folks, since I wrote about my ‘Health Scare,'” later adding, “But I didn’t realise that biting the bullet and mentioning the ‘C’ word would unlock such an avalanche.”

“It’s taken me by surprise – for many reasons. I really didn’t realise how much you guys were gunning for me…it’s great to know that, and I can’t thank you enough. It puts a smile on my face,” wrote May. The Guardian reports that May will not be making a statement outside of the web posts.

May concluded the recent post by saying that he would have more information soon and was continuing with preparations for an upcoming tour while he awaits results, indicating that specialists have been “really positive” and that any cancer would “almost certainly be treatable with success.”
