Morrissey Working On Novel And New Album

Ex-Smiths frontman Morrissey, who recently stirred controversy when he compared meat-eaters to pedophiles, has revealed that 2014 will see the indie veteran not only record a follow-up to 2009’s Years of Refusal, but continue on the literary bent sparked by his autobiography by penning a novel.

The singer recently said that his autobiography “has been more successful than any record I have ever released.” When asked during a Q&A on Morrissey fan site True To You whether he would ever make an attempt at fiction, he replied, “Yes, I am midway through my novel. I have my hopes.”

He went on to say that he reaped more satisfaction from his literary ventures than music, saying, “The actuality is that radio stations will not play my music, and the majority of people have lost faith in the music industry, and it’s generally assumed — quite rightly — that the number one chart positions are ‘bought’ by the major labels, so there really is no passion left in pop or rock music.”

“I don’t think people believe for an instant that the faces we constantly see on television and in magazines are remotely popular,” the UK indie icon continued. “It’s all, now, solely a question of marketing. All success stories are safe and dreary, and you will never be taken by surprise by a hit song that sounds out of place. This is not just my view but the view of everyone I know.”

Despite his clear frustrations with the unsavoury music business, Morrissey revealed that “we are about to record our new album,” and said that one of the tracks would be named after “Istanbul,” his second-favourite city in the world, where he feels “as if I could never die. My life is matched.”
