Ray Davies Says Kinks Reunion ‘As Close As It’s Ever Been’

Ray Davies says a reunion of his legendary British Invasion band The Kinks is “as close as it’s ever been to happening.” The band last played for the public in 1996 and have teased fans with the possibility of a reunion several times before, with the latest coming in a new issue of Uncut.

According to the magazine’s most recent issue, Ray, as well as brother and guitarist Dave Davies and drummer Mick Avory are “mainly positive” about getting back together. “I don’t want to see the legacy of The Kinks soured by two miserable old men doing it for the money,” said Dave Davies.

“I said to Ray I thought that it’d be a great shame if we don’t try and do something. I don’t think our love has diminished,” he added. “I think it would be nice to do something all together, because the chances are diminishing as we talk,” said Avory. “We’d have to knock our heads together and rehearse, if we meant to do it properly. We haven’t played together for God knows how long.”

Dave Davies had previously been critical of a Kinks reunion, comparing it to “a bad remake of Night of the Living Dead” and reinforcing the enmity between his brother and himself by saying his elder sibling is “a vain, egocentric, narcissistic arsehole,” but that a reunion was ultimately up to him.
