Ice Cube Producing N.W.A Biopic

Currently in the middle of promotions for his most recent cinematic venture, the buddy cop film Ride Along, rapper and actor Ice Cube has revealed he’s hard at work producing a project he previously alluded to, a biopic chronicling his former rap crew N.W.A, to be called Straight Outta Compton.

The film, named after the group’s seminal 1988 debut album, will be directed by Friday (in which Ice Cube starred alongside Chris Tucker) and Law Abiding Citizen director F. Gary Gray. “We just tryin’ to tell the story of the world’s most dangerous group,” Ice Cube told MTV News.

“We’re trying to tell aspects of our lives that people don’t know about, people aren’t privy to,” the rapper added, though he remained silent about script details. The group’s hometown of Compton is said to play an important role in the film, with Cube explaining, “The neighborhood influenced N.W.A, and then N.W.A influenced the neighbourhood. That’s what we’re trying to portray.”

The film has reportedly been in development for years, but has recently picked up steam as Ice Cube gears up to release his latest studio effort, Everythang’s Corrupt. In the meantime, a biopic centred on fellow West Coast gangsta rapper Tupac is also currently in production.
