Aria winning hip hop artist Illy donned his best disguise and took to the streets of hometown Melbourne to find out exactly what punters thought of his Youngbloods single and the Australian hip hop scene of which he is a king pin.
Video has emerged of the MC going undercover, by removing his hat, to test out his theory that no-one “has a fucking idea who I am” and asking unsuspecting passerbyers their opinion of his single, in the lead-up to the Triple J Hottest 100. The rapper is pushing for a vote for his song along with On & On as well as his triple J Like A Version mega medley, covering Silverchair, Hilltop Hoods, Paul Kelly, and Flume.
“I just don’t like it, it’s too Australian. Apologies Illy,” said one woman after hearing Youngbloods, unbeknownst to the fact the artist who wrote the song was standing just before her.
“The attitude it comes with like the anger or the issue with the world, being against the system, I can relate to it a bit, but I just think they just sort of got to get over it,” added one opinionated punter.
It’s not all naysayers though, the rapper encountering a number of fans during his incognito pursuit. In a heartwarming exchange one fan mentions Illy’s record Cinematic and talks about seeing the rapper twice in concert.
The penny eventually drops when the rapper cheekily asks, “if there was anything you could say to Illy what would that be? If he was standing right it front of you?” Replied the red-faced fan, “it’s nice to meet you man.”
Illy will be taking The Cinematic National Tour all around the country to treat fans to hits new and old from his extensive catalogue, kicking off in his hometown on Friday, 7th March. Joining the hitmaker will be Sydney hip hop duo Jackie Onassis, as well as triple j Unearthed Award winner, Remi.
