A 35-year-old Melbourne woman has died while camping in a tent at a music festival held on a private property in northern Victoria.
The Age reports paramedics were called to the property near Rochester, 180 kilometres north of Melbourne, at about 9am on Sunday but the woman from Yarraville was dead by the time they arrived. Investigations are underway to determine whether the death was the result of a car driving over the tent.
Detective Inspector Bernie Rankin told the Riverine Herald that a large number of people had attended the festival held on the private property over the Australia Day long weekend and most had camped for the night.
He said the woman was found dead in her tent on Sunday morning and a young, local man had been taken into custody. “The ambulance was called shortly after 9am, it arrived here (and) there was a nurse attempting CPR on the deceased woman,” he said. “We have a young man in custody who is assisting us with our inquiries.”
An un-named party goer told the local newspaper about 200 people attended the event. It is believed to have been a free music festival, held on a private property, with celebrations continuing until around 4am Australia Day.
UPDATE 12.05PM 27/01/14: The ABC reports a 24-year-old Westmere man has been charged over the death. Charges include culpable driving, dangerous driving causing death, driving under the influence of alcohol and failing to stop to render assistance. He is due to face court in Bendigo on Friday.
