Dark Mofo 2014 Announces Dates, Inaugural Launceston Festivities

The Museum of Old and New Art’s (MONA) winter festival Dark Mofo is returning to Tasmania in June and July of 2014 to celebrate everything dark through its large-scale public art, music, food, lights and noise.

Last year’s Dark Mofo events attracted more than 128,000 punters to events across ten days in Hobart. This year, the festival will run not only in Hobart, but also further north in Launceston for sixteen days between June and July. Check out the complete dates below.

This winter, Tasmania celebrates the coldest, darkest, longest night in Australia – the winter solstice. Building up to the solstice and the Nude Solstice Swim, Dark Mofo in Hobart will feature the Winter Feast at the waterfront (19th-21st June), a large-scale public artwork to light up the winter night, the Mona till Midnight opening of MONA’s winter exhibition, a curated Dark Mofo Films program, the usual after-hours debauchery of Dark Faux Mo, plus performances, installations, and much much more.

The Launceston festivities will kick off with the solstice and the Nude Solstice Swim, before featuring the Winter Feast at Inveresk (27th-28th June), a large-scale public artwork to light up the winter night, a curated Dark Mofo Films program, a healthy dose of Dark Faux Mo hedonism, art exhibitions and durational performances.

Dark Mofo’s Creative Director Leigh Carmichael said of this year’s events, “We are in the final stages of locking down our 2014 program, and will present the lineup in April. For now, we are putting the dates out there for those wishing to travel from interstate so they can book flights and organise their accommodation.

“We encourage Tasmanian residents to invite their friends and family from around Australia to join us for the Winter Feasts in both Hobart and Launceston, so they can enjoy the celebrations and darkness with us.”

This year’s celebrations – of both ancient and contemporary mythologies, birth and death, fire and light, culture and community – promise to be just as dark and immersive as last year’s. Full details below.

UPDATE 19/03/14: Organisers have now cancelled the Launceston event citing an “unsustainable business model” as the reason behind the cancellation. The Hobart event will still go ahead. Read the full statement here.
