Pirate – In The Balance

Written by Toby Smith on September 16, 2011

Pirate’s debut album “Left Of Mind” is the follow up to their critically acclaimed self-titled EP of 2009 and their 2007 demo which were widely circulated amongst Sydney’s underground – even ending up in the hands of Adrian Belew (King Crimson) and Billy Rymer (Dillinger Escape Plan).

The debut is a marked progression for the group, featuring their first use of melodic vocals, restrained and hypnotic experimental pop and layered soundscapes, with tracks like ‘In The Balance’, ‘Animals Cannibals’ and ‘Finish’ pushing in new directions.

Fans of Pirate’s frenetic technical groove rock will still be impressed – tracks like ‘Rough Shuffle’, ‘Time Minus Five’ and ‘Left Of Mind’ prove they are justifiably amongst the most fiercely experimental and exciting of the prog rock scene in Australia.
